VINTAGE c. 1889 NEW YORK CITY IN MOURNING JACOB ASTOR HOUSE WTC NEIGHBORHOOD
1889 albumen photograph of Astor House, the first luxury hotel in New York City. Located on the corner of Broadway and Vesey Streets, directly across the street from St. Paul's Chapel one block east of what today is the World Trade Center site. It was built by John Jacob Astor once the richest man in the world.

He would later lose his life in the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. Note: The flag was at half-staff on the day that this photograph was taken. Challenging research to find out why.... The photograph measures 6 1/6 x 8 1/2 and it is mounted on period cardboard which measures 9 1/2 x 12 1/2. The upper left tip of the image is slightly clipped and there is a thin scuff line on the bottom left extending from the building to the edge of the image.

Neither detracts from this wonderful old slice of New York life. This is GUARANTEED to be a vintage photograph and not a reproduction or later copy....

See my 100% Positive Feedbacks. I will be happy to respond as quickly as I can.....

I've been a collector of photographs, important documents and publications related to Native American history for over 35 years. My collection mainly covers the period from early 1700's to 1930. The images (all original) are of various sizes and have been safely stored in archival museum boxes in a climate controlled setting. They are in the same condition as when I acquired them.... I also have some interesting non-Native material and vernacular photographs that caught my eye over the years....
